How to Use Jewelweed Salve
Jewelweed is a plant that grows in the wild and is God's natural healing agent for skin irritations, especially poison ivy and its resulting rash.
If you come into contact with poison ivy, the oil from the poison ivy plant will insight a rash on your skin. Anything that the oil from the poison ivy plant touches (skin, clothing, door handles, bed sheets, leather car seats, the family pet, etc.) needs to be washed to remove the poison ivy oil or you will continue to reinfect your skin. It is an allergic reaction to the oil that makes your skin rash, itch, and ooze. This liquid your skin creates from oozing is not what spreads poison ivy. It is the liquid from the poison ivy plant that spreads the rash. The worst part is that, often the rash from the poison ivy oil doesn't start until 24-72 hours after your skin comes into contact with the oil.
Washing the poison ivy oil off your skin is the first line of defense. Once your skin reacts to the oil, then apply the Jewelweed salve every few hours (or whenever the itch comes back). The salve will not necessarily relieve the itch immediately, but about 20-30 minutes after each application you will realize, "Hey, it stopped itching!" The Jewelweed salve helps relieve your skin's reaction to the poison ivy oil. Continuing to apply the Jewelweed salve to most skin rashes will speed up the recovery process.
The Jewelweed salve applied to a bee sting immediately after being stung can immediately take away the sting and prevent your skin from reacting to the bee sting. The longer the time of application after being stung, the longer the recovery time.
Jewelweed salve can also be applied to minor abrasions or burns even if there is an open wound. It may help take away the sting of the wound and aid in healing. If a burn is more than minor, the beeswax in the salve may trap the heat in your skin. For such burns, we recommend using lavender oil instead.
